2:55 PM | Baseline Display Settings in OSX and CS4
Properly setting your monitor's and software's color settings will greatly improve the quality and consistency of your output materials and help to keep you from applying a screen gamut to your print images.
In this case we are are striving to base-align the settings to have as little affect as possible on the output image, while keeping the file in as raw of a format as possible. This way the file has the maximum amount of available information for repurposing into multiple formats. in other words, keep your master file clean and apply the settings required for the copy of the file that you need for whatever job you are doing. For instance, apply sRGB to the image you are saving out for the Web, apply the printer's profile to the file you use to print, etc.
This is done in two processes: Display Settings and Software Settings.
Properly setting your display is a two-step process, where firstly you will set the display gamut and white point, then secondly you will set the brightness.
Understanding and managing color profiles in images can be confusing and daunting, even for seasoned professionals. Many images are inadvertently tagged with the sRGB profile -- a profile for viewing images on the Internet -- causing unwanted color loss and clipping in print images.
It used to be that you had to manage the color settings in each of your Adobe programs individually. But now Bridge provides the ability to syncronize your color settings across the entire software suite. First, though, you will need to create a settings file to apply to the other programs, which you can do through photoshop.
That's it! Your settings are now synchronized across all the Adobe programs. You can confirm this by going into another program besides Photoshop and choosing the Color Settings. At the top of the dialog box window it should say "Your Creative Suite applications are synchronized using the same color settings for consistent color management." (see screen shot from Illustrator below.)
