2:55 PM | Baseline Display Settings in OSX and CS4

Properly setting your monitor's and software's color settings will greatly improve the quality and consistency of your output materials and help to keep you from applying a screen gamut to your print images.

In this case we are are striving to base-align the settings to have as little affect as possible on the output image, while keeping the file in as raw of a format as possible. This way the file has the maximum amount of available information for repurposing into multiple formats. in other words, keep your master file clean and apply the settings required for the copy of the file that you need for whatever job you are doing. For instance, apply sRGB to the image you are saving out for the Web, apply the printer's profile to the file you use to print, etc.

This is done in two processes: Display Settings and Software Settings.

1. Display Settings

Properly setting your display is a two-step process, where firstly you will set the display gamut and white point, then secondly you will set the brightness.

    1. Open System Preferences > Display

    2. Select the "Color" tab.

    3. Select the "Calibrate" button

    4. In the Display Calibrator Assistant, press "Continue

    5. With the introduction of Snow Leopard, Apple has changed the monitor target gamut from 1.8 to 2.2. Select the 2.2 target gamma and then "continue".

    6. In the Targe White Point window select D65 and then "continue".

    7. Rename your new profile to your liking and then select "continue".

    8. You will be returned to the main Displays dialog box. Make sure the new profile is selected and close System Preferences.

    9. You are now ready to adjust the brightness. From this website: http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php you will be presented with a calibration image to help you properly adjust your monitor. Follow the directions on the site, then proceed to Step 2: Software Settings.

2. Software Settings

Understanding and managing color profiles in images can be confusing and daunting, even for seasoned professionals. Many images are inadvertently tagged with the sRGB profile -- a profile for viewing images on the Internet -- causing unwanted color loss and clipping in print images.

It used to be that you had to manage the color settings in each of your Adobe programs individually. But now Bridge provides the ability to syncronize your color settings across the entire software suite. First, though, you will need to create a settings file to apply to the other programs, which you can do through photoshop.

    1. Open Photoshop and choose Edit > Color Settings.

    2. In the Color Settings dialog box, choose your profile settings, then click the Save button. I choose to not have any color management applied to anything until I know exactly what I want to do with it, while maintaining the least impactful Working Space. Your needs may vary. Notice, at the top of the window, Photoshop alerts you to the fact that your settings are not yet synchronized across the Creative Suite.

    3. In the Save Settings dialog box, name the profile and click Save.

    4. In the Color Settings Comment dialog box, enter a comment to help you remember information about the profile, if you wish.

    5. Open Bridge and choose Edit > Color Settings.

    6. Find your settings file in the list. Select the settings file and click Apply.

That's it! Your settings are now synchronized across all the Adobe programs. You can confirm this by going into another program besides Photoshop and choosing the Color Settings. At the top of the dialog box window it should say "Your Creative Suite applications are synchronized using the same color settings for consistent color management." (see screen shot from Illustrator below.)
